5 things you need to know today

Switzer Daily
10 March 2020

1. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank more than 2000 points yesterday, which was the worst day the market has seen since the 2008 GFC. The market is responding to angst spread by the coronavirus and a new oil price war.

2. The Dow sank 2,014 points, or 7.8 per cent, to 23851, S&P 500 fell 7.6 per cent to 2746. And the Nasdaq Composite slid 7.3 per cent to 7950.

3. When the circuit breaker hit, the market closed for 15 minutes, which hasn't occurred in decades. The Dow and Nasdaq were down 19 per cent from record highs set earlier this year and the S&P had fallen 18 per cent from its peak, leaving them on the brink of bear-market territory.

4. Italy's Prime Minister announced that the measures taken in northern Italy to protect citizens from coronavirus will be enforced in the whole of Italy. Citizens are encouraged not to leave their homes, and all public gatherings/sporting events etc. have been cancelled..

5. The coronavirus has officially created the biggest challenge for the global airline industry since 9/11. As Asian and European airlines are continuing to cut flights, bookings are down and cancellations are on the rise.
