  1. Malcolm Turnbull has lashed out against his successor, Scott Morrison over his handling of the bushfire crisis. He told the BBC, “Instead of doing what a leader should do and preparing people..., he downplayed it and then of course chose to go away on holiday in Hawaii? At the peak of the crisis? I just can’t explain any of that. It’s just not consistent with the way in which a prime minister would or should act.”

  2. Fortescue shares climbed another 5 per cent on Wednesday to close at a record $12.69, making Mining magnate Andrew Forrest on track to claim the title of Australia's richest man.

  3. China acts against the spread of coronavirus by quarantining 11 million people in the city of Wahun in central China. The residents are not allowed to travel as the number of people infected with the virus rises to 444 and the death toll has almost doubled to 17 from 9 people reported earlier on Wednesday.

  4. In terms of tourism this summer has been the "worst on record", costing the nation $2bn and could wipe a further $4.5bn from the industry. Tourism Australia managing director Phillipa Harrison said: “There is no doubt Australian tourism has been hit hard by the recent bushfires. It’s critical we help the industry get back on its feet as soon as possible.”

  5. Overnight the Dow Jones was down 9.77 points (0.033%) to 29,186.27. However the S&P was up slightly, rising 0.96 points (0.029%) to 3,321.75 and Nasdaq was also up 12.96 points (0.14%) to 9,383.77.
