1. Young people are "peak transmitters" of COVID-19

Modelling by the Doherty Institute released by the federal government indicates that young people are considered "peak transmitters" of the coronavirus and should now be the focus of the vaccine rollout. Vaccines are expected to be opened up to those aged 30-39 by the start of September and in October for those aged 16-29.

2. RBA still planning to scale back bond-buying program

The Reserve Bank of Australia is still planning to reduce its bond buying program from $5 billion per week to $4 billion from next month despite recent lockdowns, while RBA governor Philip Lowe highlighted the bank's "flexible approach to the rate of bond purchases" in a statement. "The program will continue to be reviewed in light of economic conditions and the health situation, and their implications for the expected progress towards full employment and the inflation target," Lowe said.

3. Coronavirus reemerges in Wuhan for the first time in over a year

China has announced mass coronavirus testing in Wuhan after the first non-imported cases in more than a year were detected in the city where the disease was first identified in late 2019. Authorities said they are planning to test all 11 million residents.

4. Can crocs cut communications cables?

A severed fibre optic cable at Darwin Crocodile Farm on Saturday could not be fully repaired until the following day as Telstra workers declined to carry out repairs at night with crocodiles nearby, the ABC reported. Mobile and landline services were restored by Sunday afternoon, and Telstra does not believe a croc is the culprit for the cut.

5. S&P 500 sets new record high

The S&P 500 rose by 35.99 points or 0.82% to 4,423.15 on Tuesday, a new record-high close for the index. The Dow Jones moved up 278.24 points or 0.80% to 35,116.40 and the Nasdaq rose by 80.23 points or 0.55% to 14,761.30.
