5 things you need to know today

Switzer Daily
8 October 2020

1. Today at 11.30 am AEDT, the would-be veeps (Vice Presidents) face off in a head-to-head debate, which ordinarily would be pretty well ignored by most (especially foreign audiences). But not this time in the age of the Coronavirus. In case you missed it, Donald Trump’s Mike Pence will take on Joe Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris. Those names shouldn’t be forgotten because one could become President over the next four years. Donald is a 74-year old and Joe’s 77. COVID-19 and its death strike rate for over 70s means the two potential US Presidents could one day be missing in action.

2. The Coronavirus has struck again and it could stop NSW residents getting into Queensland in November! The SMH reports that three new local cases of COVID-19 have emerged that has spoiled NSW’s copybook, which saw the state have 12 days straight of no recent community transmission. This won’t be good for the relationship between NSW’s Gladys and Queensland’s Annastacia but spare a thought for the business owners in the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns, who are desperate to see southerners come to town with all their Josh Frydenberg tax cuts!

3. Sezzle has posted a 231.5% year-on-year increase in underlying merchant sales to US$228.2m during Q3, a record quarter for the buy now, pay later company. Annualised underlying merchant sales reached US$985.9m, close to the US$1b target the company set to be reached by the end of 2020.

4. Facebook has announced it will temporarily halt political ads in the US after polls close for the 2020 election on November 3 "to reduce opportunities for confusion or abuse". The company previously announced it would prevent new political ads from running in the week before the election.

5. Stocks on Wall Street climbed overnight, with the Dow Jones recording its biggest single day gain since mid-July according to CNBC after moving 530.70 points or 1.91% higher to 28,306.46. The S&P 500 was up 58.50 points or 1.74% to 3,419.45 and the Nasdaq rose 210.00 points or 1.88% to 11,364.60.
