5 things you need to know today

Switzer Daily
23 April 2020

1. The ASX is set to open on a high, as gold prices jumped up 1.9 per cent overnight in the US.

2. Oil prices have risen 19%, after a historical below 0 drop earlier this week. The oil rise comes after Trump sent a Twitter threat to Iran saying he has "instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea." Though, many analysts associate the oil price volatility with coronavirus uncertainty and believe they have little association with the "oil price war" that has been suggested.

3. Analysts have predicted rents could fall up to 30 per cent over the next two years, particularly in the business and retail space.

4. The WHO has pleaded with the US to reconsider their stance on halting funding to the WHO, as they state "the virus will be with us for a long time", and their funding support will "help save lives".

5. Wall Street closed on a high yesterday, with the Dow Jones rising 1.99% to 23,475.82, the S&P 500 up 2.29% to 2,799.31 and Nasdaq jumping 2.81% to 8,495.38.
