5 things you need to know today

Switzer Daily
17 April 2020

1. Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has faced scrutiny ahead of the launch of his memoir book "A Bigger Picture", which is set to be released on Monday. He has been criticised for singling out a number of politicians, including Scott Morrison. Sky News' Peta Credlin said, "He has no moral compass...the only person who comes out unscathed is the guy who had his fingers on the keyboard writing this book, that tells you everything."

2. Prime Minister Scott Morrison appeared on the ABC's 7.30 Report last night to discuss whether restrictions will be lifted soon. The Prime Minister said restrictions will not be lifted any time soon to avoid Australia becoming like New York, London and Spain. "If you don't keep it under control, it'll get away from you quickly and then you'll have to lockdown even harder, and the economic costs will be even worse," said the PM.

3. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin will resume limited domestic flights today, with social distancing measures in place. This is in addition to the international repatriation flights.

4. President Trump is pushing to re-open areas of the US, despite the United States being the most heavily impacted country by Coronavirus at the moment.

5. Wall Street ended on a high yesterday, with the Dow up 0.14% to 23,537.68, S&P 500 up 0.58% to 2,799.55 and Nasdaq leading again, rising 1.66% to 8,532.36.
