1. PM announces $1.2 billion in spending for apprentices

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is set to unveil $1.2 billion in spending on wage subsidies for an estimated 70,000 new apprentices and trainees in a speech at The Australian Financial Review Business Summit. The PM will also highlight potential adjustments to migration to help fill 54,000 regional jobs.

2. NAB CEO says business investment is on the rise

National Australia Bank CEO Ross McEwan told The Australian that the bank's business customers are expecting above average spending on capital across a range of different industries. "It is very clear that businesses are starting to invest again and they are seeing lots of opportunity," McEwan said.

3. Trade Minister warns against "vaccine protectionism"

After the Italian government blocked the export of 250,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses last week, Trade Minister Dan Tehan said that the Australian Government is planning to work with a "coalition of countries" including New Zealand and Canada to put pressure on the European Union to change its policy. "The more we can put collective pressure on them, the more they will realise what they are doing is wrong," Tehan told the ABC.

4. Zoo in China replaces wolf with dog

Xiangwushan Zoo in the city of Xianning in China has been caught trying to pass off a dog as a wolf. A visitor to the park who spotted a dog in the wolf enclosure was told by park staff that there had been a wolf, but it had died of old age.

5. Dow hits intraday record as Nasdaq sinks

The Dow Jones rose to a new intraday record high on Monday and closed up 306.14 points or 0.97% to 31,802.44, while the Nasdaq fell 310.99 points or 2.41% to 12,609.16. The S&P 500 was also down, falling 20.59 points or 0.54% to 3,821.35.
