HSBC’s Paul Bloxham expects two more rate rises and a 13% fall in house prices, Shaw and Partners’ Julia Lee says the big four’s run is over, and FNArena’s Rudi Filapek-Vandyck goes through the stocks the short sellers are betting against.
The RBA hands down its decision on Tuesday afternoon, and this week’s Switzer Show is about what comes after it: how many more rises are coming, how far property falls, and where the money goes while that happens:
- Paul Bloxham, HSBC’s chief economist, expects the RBA to lift twice more, this week and again in November. He calls it “the downturn we have to have”, and has house prices falling 13% nationally and 17% in Sydney
- Julia Lee of Shaw and Partners says the big four’s run is over on a structural change, not a cyclical one. She has been buying JB Hi-Fi and Qantas instead, and holding floating rate notes rather than locking in duration
- Rudi Filapek-Vandyck of FNArena on the stocks the short sellers are betting against while the analysts still back them: Xero, WiseTech, Paladin, Rio Tinto and Treasury Wine Estates. Only one in three ASX 200 stocks is up this year
The Switzer Show streams on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.
