Joe Carrello

I am a Health Economist with a demonstrated history of developing evidence-based policy solutions to address complex public health issues and communicating findings to a wide range of audiences. My research interests are largely driven by a sense of social justice, aiming to improve health equity through addressing the socio-economic determinants of health (particularly during the formative adolescent years), and increasing access to effective therapies for those with unmet needs.

In my PhD I developed an economic model to estimate the lifetime costs and health outcomes of overweight and obesity in Australian adolescents. This model was applied to demonstrate the economic benefits of reducing the current prevalence of these conditions, as well as the ‘value-for-money’ of digital health interventions as a potential strategy to achieve this.

In my current role I am responsible for evaluating new health technologies for consideration of government subsidy through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS), ensuring they are safe, effective, represent ‘value-for-money’ for the taxpayer and/or address an area of unmet need. In 2023 I contributed to the Health Technology Assessment (HTA) policy and methods review which provided recommendations to government to ensure Australians can continue to access effective, safe and affordable health technologies in an equitable and timely way
